ITHACA, N.Y.— After Friday's 3-2 loss to Mercyhurst, Cornell came alive as nine Big Red skaters including six newcomers recorded points as the Cornell women's hockey team took down Mercyhurst, 4-0, at Lynah Rink Saturday.
Rory Guilday scored off a dish from
Lily Delianedis,
Gabbie Rud converted on a Big Red power play with assists from
Alexa Davis and
Ashley Messier, Delianedis later connected on a goal of her own with an assist from
Izzy Daniel and
Bella Kang netted another with feeds from Sam Burke and
Leah MacSween.
In net,
Lindsay Browning recorded 28 saves for the 14th shutout of her career.
"Yesterday's game was mostly just getting used to playing again," said Browning. "We had a lot of good aspects to our game yesterday and we just needed to perfect them and today I think we just executed better overall."
Guilday put the Big Red up 1-0 at the 7-minute mark of the opening period when she found a pass from
Lily Delianedis and sent a slapshot flying over the shoulder of Lakers goaltender Jenna Silvonen (19 saves).
While the Big Red jumped to the early 1-0 win, the Lakers took the early shots advantage with 14 in the first period compared to the Big Red's three.
From there on, though, it was all Cornell as the Big Red came knocking on Mercyhurst's door with 12 shots and two goals in the second period. The Big Red converted on one of four power plays in the second period when
Gabbie Rud went bar down in the final three seconds of the man-up advantage.
Late in the third period the Big Red and Mercyhurst found themselves both down a player when the team's lined up for a faceoff in the Mercyhurst zone. Mercyhurst won the faceoff and sent the puck around the boards right to where
Izzy Daniel was located. Daniel fired off a shot and Delianedis caught a piece of it to ping the puck off the pipe and in for the 3-0 Cornell advantage and her first collegiate goal.
Finally, with just over three minutes left in regulation, the Big Red killed its fifth and final penalty of the day when
Leah MacSween dished a pass to Sam Burke in front of the Lakers' net. Burke fired a close shot off the leg pad of Silvonen and
Bella Kang was set up perfectly to bury the rebound in the back of Mercyhurst's net.
The Big Red killed all five of its penalties on the day, while Mercyhurst played a woman down on six occasions.
The 4-0 win marks the largest victory margin for a Big Red team since it took down #10 Harvard on March 7, 2020 to earn a trip to the ECAC Hockey Championship game.
ECAC Hockey action gets underway next weekend when the Big Red battle at Harvard on Oct. 29 before facing off against Dartmouth the following day. Game times are set for 6 p.m. and 3 p.m., respectively.
