CAMBRIDGE, MASS.— Sophomore
Kaitlin Jockims scored the first goal of her career, but it wasn't enough as Harvard scored two empty netters late in the third period to pass the Big Red, 4-1, in its ECAC Hockey league opener.
Anne Bloomer netted one early to give the Crimson (3-0-0, 2-0-0) the upper hand over the BIg Red (1-2-0, 0-1-0) just over two minutes into the opening frame. The Big Red won a face off in its own zone, but Bloomer quickly maintained possession of the puck behind the net, skated up to the blue line, deked
Lily Delianedis and fired off a shot that found its way through the skinny between
Lindsay Browning (34 saves) and the pipe.
Harvard's Keely Moy was called for checking and sent to the box for two minutes at the 12:24 mark of the first period for the first power play of the day. The Big Red then converted when Jockims potted her first career goal.
Jockims won a faceoff in the Cornell zone and
Izzy Daniel brought the puck from behind the blue line to just inside the circle in Harvard's end before firing a pass to
Lily Delianedis who immediately found Jockims open in front of Becky Dutton (26 saves). Jockims' first shot was saved by Dutton, but the rebound found itself right back on her stick and the Saskatoon, Saskatchewan native buried the puck to tie things at one.
The second period saw another Harvard goal, this time from Dominique Petrie as she worked coast-to-coast through defenders to net the backhand over the shoulder of Browning.
Playing down, the Cornell pulled Browning with two minutes left in the third just as Harvard was gaining possession at its blue line. A quick turnover led to the Big Red's best chance to score during the 6 on 5 situation, but an offsides whistle led to a Becca Gilmore empty-net goal before another quick Cornell turnover and gave Gilmore a clear shot on the unmanned net once again.
The Big Red totaled 27 shots compared to the Crimson's 38 and won 36.23 of its faceoffs. The loss marks the first to Harvard since January 8, 2016.
Cornell looks to bounce back tomorrow as it takes on Dartmouth at 3 p.m. at Thompson Arena in Hanover.
