BOSTON - The Cornell men's lightweight rowing program traveled a pair of boats to the 56th Head of the Charles Regatta on Sunday, competing in the lightweight eight and the lightweight four. Cornell's lightweight eight earned silver, while the four placed seventh.
Competing in the eight for the Big Red was Louis Whittle, Cid Decatur, Zach Thurston, Eric Whitehead, Jack Savell, Ben Hopkins, Gerald Anderson, Emmett Patterson and coxswain John Jaicks. The Big Red's four consisted of Thomas Kunkler, James Brady, Bradley Horvitz, Christiaan Eikeboom and coxswain Amanda Klafter.
In the lightweight eight, Cornell took second place with a time of 14:39.750, finishing over three seconds ahead of third-place Princeton. In the eight, Cornell sat in third place after the first sector, but pulled into second place at the halfway point. Finishing second out of 16 boats, the Big Red finished ahead of boats from Princeton, Harvard, Dartmouth, Navy, Penn, Georgetown, Yale, Mercyhurst, MIT and Delaware.
Competing in the lightweight four, the Big Red placed sixth with a time of 17:08.867. Cornell was as low as ninth place after the first section but gradually worked its way into seventh position. A one minute penalty assessed to Harvard moved Cornell up one spot in the final results. The Big Red finished ahead of boats from Yale, Dartmouth, Temple, Harvard, Delaware, Gordon and Southern California.
