Princeton Staves Off Women's Soccer, 1-0

PRINCETON, N.J. – The Cornell women's soccer team gave Ivy League contender Princeton all it could handle on Saturday, with the Tigers staving off the Big Red for a 1-0 victory at Sherrerd Field.

For a second straight game, senior goalkeeper Miranda Iannone set a career high for saves in a game. Among her 10 stops on the day, six came inside the first 14 minutes to keep Cornell (3-10-2, 1-5 Ivy League) level until it could find its footing.

Just as she was on the Big Red's last game on a fast artificial surface – two weeks ago at Yale – Iannone was comfortable storming off her line to cut down balls served before the Big Red's back line. That quality was on full display less than two minutes in, when she cut down a point-blank effort from Tatum Gee, then sprung back to her feet to stop and bounce on the rebound.

Princeton (13-2-1, 5-1) would eventually score the game's lone goal in the 32rd minute, when Grace Sherman took a pass about 15 yards out from the right post and calmly side-footed a shot along the turf and inside the far post.

But the Tigers could not pull away from a Big Red squad that held its opposition scoreless in the second half for the first time since its Ivy League opener against Columbia on Sept. 25. Beyond just that, Cornell also forced five saves out of goalkeeper Grace Barbara.

Senior Aidan Julia Reineman had perhaps the best chances in a span of four minutes during the second half. Her first threat came on a 25-yard shot labeled for a spot just under the crossbar, but Barbara was able to punch the ball over the frame. The next opportunity came on the aftermath of a corner kick, when a shot 18 yards out from the post skidded across the turf and forced a dive from Barbara to her right.

Cornell concludes its season at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 6 at Dartmouth.
