Vito Arujau have been named captains for the 2021-22 season.
• Diakomihalis and Arujau return to the Big Red lineup after taking the 2019-20 season off to train for the Olympics. Both last appeared for the Big Red at the 2019 NCAA Championships.
• In it's last season of competition, the Big Red went 11-7 in dual meets with a 4-1 mark in Ivy League competition. Cornell has posted 34 consecutive seasons with a dual meet record above .500, dating back to the 1986-87 season.
• Cornell has two wrestlers ranked in the top five of their respective weight classes and four in the top 10.
• The Big Red returns seven previous NCAA qualifiers to the roster in 2021-22.

AT THE BINGHAMTON OPEN
• Cornell crowned two champions at the Jonathan Kaloust Bearcat Open with
Chris Foca winning at 174 pounds and
Jonathan Loew winning at 184 pounds.
• The Big Red had four other finalists in

NEW MINDS
• With the hiring of
Mike Grey '11 in May, Cornell brought in three new assistant coaches to round out the staff.
• Joining the Big Red in 2021-22 is
Donnie Vinson (associate head coach),
Kellen Russell (assistant coach) and
Nick Gwiazdowski (volunteer assistant coach)
• Vinson returns to Cornell after four seasons as an assistant coach at NC State. While at Cornell from 2014-17, Vinson learned from a staff that included three Division I head coaches (Grey, Koll and Damion Hahn of South Dakota State).
• A two-time NCAA champion at 141 pounds, Russell comes back to the east coast following a seven-year stint at his alma mater, Michigan. Russell coached 27 All-Americans and helped the Wolverines to five top 10 NCAA finishes while coaching the maize and blue.
• Gwiazdowski brings a championship caliber mind to the room as a two-time NCAA champion at heavyweight.
THE RETURN
•
Yianni Diakomihalis and
Vito Arujau are set to return to the mat for the Big Red in 2021-22 after sitting out the 2019-20 season in preparation for an Olympic run. With the COVID-19 pandemic, it's been two seasons since Big Red fans them wrestle a folkstyle match.
• What weight each wrestler will appear at has been one of the hottest debates in the wrestling community over the last few months.
• Diakomihalis is a two-time NCAA champion at 141 pounds and was a Hodge Trophy finalist during his sophomore season in 2018-19.
• Diakomihalis owns the longest winning streak in the NCAA, entering the season having won 47 consecutive matches dating back to his freshman campaign in 2017-18.
• Arujau took fourth at the 2019 NCAA Championships at 125 pounds, earning his first All-America honor. His only collegiate losses are to then teammate Chas Tucker at 133 pounds, Patrick Glory and Sebastian Rivera.
BROTHERS IN ARMS
• Several wrestlers on the current Cornell roster have brotherly ties to the program.

Vito Arujau's brother, Nick, wrestled for the Big Red for three seasons from 2011-12 through 2013-14.

Colt Barley's brother Jonah was on the Cornell wrestling team from 2017-18 through 2020-21.
•
Daniel Koll's brother Will wrestled at Cornell from 2015-16 through 2018-19, and his father Rob is the former head coach.
• Brothers Yianni and
Greg Diakomihalis, and Colton and
Wyatt Yapoujian are currently on the team with one another.
• Recently the Big Red have fielded both Kyle and Corey Dake, Mike and Mark Grey, Gabe and Max Dean, Jake and Josh Arnone, Nick and Ryan Bridge, Logan and Conner David, Billy and Jake George, Taylor and Michael Moore, Duke and William Pickett, Brian and Dylan Realbuto, Mike and Matt Russo, as well as Cam and Taylor Simaz among many others historically.
ABOUT STANFORD
• Stanford was defeated by #4 Oklahoma State in its first dual of the season, 29-7.
• The Cardinal got wins from Jaden Abas (149) and Shane Griffith (165). Abas scored a major decision (15-6) over Kaden Gfeller. Top-ranked Griffith was a victor by decision, 4-0, over #6 Travis Wittlake.
• In the rankings for Stanford is #32 Jackson DiSario (133), #8 Abas, #1 Griffith, #30 Tyler Eischens (174) and #26 Nick Stemmet (197).
• InterMat ranks Stanford as the #17 tournament team and has them unranked in their dual meet rankings.
• Stanford returns five NCAA qualifiers, headlined by Griffith, the 2021 National Champion at 165 pounds. Abas was an All-American a year ago placing seventh. Previous qualifiers include Jackson DiSario, Tyler Eischens and Nick Stemmet.
• Griffith was named Pac-12 Wrestler of the Week this past week.

THE SERIES VS. STANFORD
• Cornell has wrestled Stanford in a dual setting just once previously during the 1973-74 season.
• The Big Red defeated Stanford, 26-16 in a dual that took place in Stanford, Calif. on Jan. 12, 1974. Cornell was coached by Jimmy Miller in what was his final season (203-135-7, 27 years).
• The win over Stanford rounded out a trip to the West Coast that saw the Big Red wrestle against San Francisco State, Cal Poly, UCLA and Cal.
• Cornell used wins from Andrew Little, David Schaefer, Dale Porter, David Crawford, Walter Grote and Matthew Lafrance to defeat the Cardinal. Schaefer pinned his opponent at 126 pounds.
KOLL WORLD
• Long-time Cornell head coach Rob Koll is set for his return to Ithaca this weekend after taking over the Stanford program in May.
• Koll is the all-time wins leader at Cornell guiding the Big Red to a 317-101-5 (.755) career record over 27 seasons. In Ivy League competition, Koll left the league with a 125-9-1 (.929) record.
• Koll led Cornell to 20 Ivy League and 11 EIWA titles, crowning 16 NCAA champions and aiding in the development of 71 All-Americans. During his tenure Cornell qualified 177 wrestlers for the NCAA Championships and earned 66 individual EIWA champions.

• Cornell will travel to the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational on Dec. 3-4 before heading to Florida for the National Duals, Dec. 20-21 and to Tennessee for the Southern Scuffle on Jan. 1-2.
