ITHACA, N.Y. — The Cornel women's hockey team saw its first 3-on-3 overtime situation of the season Saturday as the Big Red (1-4-1) played Brown (0-4-2) to a 3-3 draw at Lynah Rink.
After a quiet opening period and first half of the second, Brown lined up for a faceoff in the Cornell zone. Maya Mangiafico won the faceoff for Brown and dished the puck back to Madie Stockfish who worked through defenders to send a shot over the blocker of
Lindsay Browning (14 saves) 11:57 into the second stanza.
A short six or so minutes later, the Big Red responded back when
Gillis Frechette clapped a one-timer feed from
Izzy Daniel and
Rory Guilday while the Big Red were on the power play.
With just 35 seconds left in the second period,
Lily Delianedis found the puck loose on the right side of the Brown net to net her second goal of the season.
Izzy Daniel fired off a shot that was saved by Kaley Doyle (36 saves), but the rebound found itself on the stick of
Athena Song who quickly found Delianedis with an open net to put the Big Red up by one headed into the final period.
Brown tied things with just under six minutes left in the third as Cameron Sikich drove the puck to the Big Red net where a skirmish of sticks led to an Anna Sheldon goal. Not long after, Brown scored the go-ahead when Sikich shot from the above the faceoff circle and Shay Maloney found the rebound for a goal with 4:26 left in the third.
Refusing to give up, Cornell pulled Browning to play with an extra skater and it payed off as Guilday fired a shot from the point that was collected by Delianedis and finally
Claudia Yu who was able to put on the finishing touches to force overtime.
With time winding down and only 70 seconds left on the clock, Brown had its best chance to secure its first win of the season when it went on a power play. A cross-crease pass made its way to Mangiafico who looked to shoot the puck to the right side of the net, but Browning sprawled across the paint to make a terrific glove save and keep the Big Red from an 0-2 weekend.
"I liked the way we came back," said the Everett Family Head Coach of Women's Ice Hockey,
Doug Derraugh '91. "We didn't quit when we were down."
Cornell outshot the Bears 39-17, but keying in on prime opportunities and turnovers is what made the difference in the game. Brown took advantage of 12 Cornell penalty minutes while only serving eight of its own and was near even with the Big Red in faceoffs won with Cornell winning 32 and the Bears 31.
"I thought we were a little bit sharper today in a few areas like our power play and our O-zone play, but we're still turning there puck over too much both from our D-zone to our breakout and also to the middle of the ice," Derraugh added.
The Big Red have a short turnaround before hosting Syracuse Tuesday night at Lynah Rink. Puck drop is set for 7 p.m.
