ITHACA, N.Y. -- Junior
Lillian Myers (third) and sophomore
Lucija Ruzevic (fifth) placed in the top five at the 2021 College Sailing Women's Singlehanded Nationals. The regatta was hosted by Severn Sailing Association in conjunction with the U.S. Naval Academy on the Chesapeake.
Myers, who took fifth in 2019 for the Janet Lutz Trophy, bettered that finish on the podium, with her 49 points just shy of Jacksonville's Charlotte Rose (39) and Boston College's Sophia Reineke (40). Her spot in third is the highest finish ever by a Cornell sailor at singlehanded nationals. Ruzevic finished behind the pack of four at the top in the 17-sailor field, with her 90 points good for the top five.
A tremendously consistent weekend for Myers saw her take third in half of the 14 races with a pair of second-place efforts and taking no lower that sixth in any race. Ruzevic placed in the top 10 in every start during the weekend and had seven top-five finishes. She was runner-up in the final race on Saturday.
A third Big Red qualifier, sophomore
Lauren Ehnot, was forced to bow out of the competition due to illness in the days before the championship after earning an at-large bid.
With the fall semester complete, the Big Red will be scheduled to get back in the water for the Rose Bowl Regatta on Jan. 8-9 in Los Angeles, Calif.
