Kyle Dake's Olympic Journey Begins on Wednesday Night

8/3/2021 11:00:00 AM

ITHACA, N.Y. – Kyle Dake's run at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo is set to get underway on Wednesday, August 4 at 10:30 p.m. EST in Makuhari Messe Hall A. Dake aims to become the first Big Red wrestler to secure a medal at the games since Charles Ackerly brought home gold at the 1920 Olympic Games in Antwerp, Belgium.

Dake has served as a volunteer assistant coach with his alma mater for four seasons while breaking out onto the world scene. He was third in Olympic trials in 2012 and second four years later before really taking off. He hasn't lost a freestyle match since January 2018, leading to a pair of world titles. Dake is 100-17 at the senior level and 50-1 since 2018. Against current 74kg Olympians, Dake is 1-0 with a 4-3 win over Italy's Frank Chamizo.

Five Cornellians represent the Big Red in Tokyo for the 2020 Summer Games, bringing Cornell's total number of Olympians to 115 (186 total appearances). Cornell has won 62 total Olympics medals, including 44 in the Summer Games (20 gold, 17 silver, seven bronze). Taylor Knibb '20 has already medaled for the Big Red in 2021, earning a silver medal in the Mixed Relay Triathlon.
