STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – The Cornell men's track and field team emerged victorious in the eight-team field at Saturday's Penn 10-Team Select at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Facility in Staten Island, N.Y., accruing 110 points to win the meet and capturing three individual event wins and a pair of Cornell all-time top-10 marks in the process.
Sophomore Tomas Kersulis continued a fantastic start to his first collegiate indoor season, winning the 200-meter in a collegiate-best 21.44. Kersulis' performance improves upon his time of 21.76 from last weekend's Southern Tier Invite and advances him to third all-time on the Big Red's top-10 list.
Junior Christian Martin also dropped time in the 60-meter hurdles, finishing second in a personal-best 8.03 to improve to sixth all-time at Cornell in the event. Martin clocked in at 8.08 in his season debut at the Greg Page Relays on Dec. 4, 2021.
The sprints duo of junior Smith Charles (6.93) and freshman Domenic Barresi (7.05) finished first and second, respectively, in the 60-meter for the second-straight meet. Both Charles and Barresi won their preliminary heats, and Charles' time marked a season-best. Charles didn't stop there, however, adding a fourth-place finish in the long jump (7.12m/23-04.50). Freshman Curtis Weh also leaped a collegiate-best 7.12m (23-04.50), placing fifth.
Barresi, Martin, and Kersulis teamed up with sophomore Joshua Gittens in the 4x400-meter relay to produce a winning time of 3:16.97 for Cornell's third individual victory of the day.
In the field, the Big Red illustrated that strength comes in numbers, finishing 2-3-4 in both the pole vault and weight throw. Sophomore Shane Racey, senior Johannes Stromhaug, and junior Dylan Rodgers finished in that order in the pole vault, while senior Ian Frost (17.78m/58-04.00), freshman Phil Coppolino (17.16m/56-03.75), and sophomore Brad Morell (16.67m/54-08.25) did so in the weight throw. Morell added a fifth-place finish in the shot put (16.01m/52-06.50), with senior Dan Mead as Cornell's top finisher in the event on the day, placing third with a heave of 16.42m (53-10.50).
In the triple jump, junior Jelani Williams' leap of 14.17m (46-06.00) was good for third and marked a season-best.
The Cornell men's track and field team will divide and conquer next weekend when it splits forces to compete at the Penn State National Open on Jan. 21-22 in University Park, Pa. and the Villanova Invitational on Jan. 22 in Staten Island, N.Y.
