Saturday Night Redux:

•  Freshman forward Justin Ertel's first collegiate goal doubled as the Big Red's first strike of the new year on Saturday, but Arizona State took advantage of a pair of defensive miscues to take control in the second period and ride out a 5-2 victory.
•  Ondrej Psenicka, another freshman forward, scored Cornell's second goal with the goaltender pulled in favor of an extra attacker with 1:24 to play in the third period. That cut the Big Red's deficit to 3-2, but the Sun Devils potted a pair of empty-net goals to inflate the final margin.
•  Junior forward Matt Stienburg recorded the primary assist on Cornell's final goal to push his active scoring streak to 11 games. It's the Big Red's longest scoring streak since Doug Derraugh '91 (current Everett Family Head Coach of Women's Hockey) and eventual NHLer Ryan Hughes '93 had streaks of 20 and 19 games, respectively, that ended simultaneously on Feb. 2, 1991.
•  Stienburg continues to lead the nation in points per game (1.58), while senior linemate Max Andreev ranks fifth (1.42). Andreev also assisted on Psenicka's goal last night to run his own scoring streak to eight games.
•  Senior forward Brenden Locke set up Ertel's goal in the first period, giving him six points over his last four games.
•  Freshman goaltender Joe Howe drew the start and made 23 saves.
•  The loss ended Cornell's unbeaten streak at eight games (7-0-1), dating back to its only other defeat this season — Nov. 5 at Harvard.

Saturday's Highlights:

About Arizona State:

•  Colin Theisen (#62, 13-12–25) and Matthew Kopperud (#28, 12-13–25) continue to share the team lead in scoring after both scoring goals in last night's series opener. Theisen is one of seven players across the nation to have a pair of shorthanded goals, and Kopperud's eight power-play goals are second-most in the nation.
•  ASU has eight players carrying a plus rating, with the forward leaders among that group typically playing on the same line — freshman Josh Doan (#94, 5-15–20) centering Theisen and Demetrios Koumontzis (#27, 4-6–10, plus-7).
•  Sophomore Cole Brady (#34, 4-5, 3.87, .903) drew the start in the first game against the Big Red and recorded the victory with 31 saves. Sophomore Ben Kraws (#33, 7-5, 3.40, .896) has started the team's other 12 games in goal.

The Series With Arizona State:

•  Cornell is visiting Arizona State for the first time, reciprocating the Sun Devils' visit to Ithaca for two games Jan. 11-12, 2019. ASU entered those games as the national leader in wins, though the Big Red swept the series, 6-1 and 3-2, to make a big move up the Pairwise rankings. Both teams eventually qualified for at-large bids to the NCAA tournament.
•  Those games had temporarily reduced the number of current Division I teams that the Big Red hadn't yet played to four (Bentley, Connecticut, Holy Cross and recently-reinstated Alaska Anchorage), though St. Thomas has since joined the top tier of college hockey to push that number to five.
