Early Strike, Strong Goaltending Not Enough For Women's Hockey

#10 Yale scores four unanswered goals to top Cornell, 4-1

NEW HAVEN, Conn. — Sophomore forward Lily Delianedis scored her team-leading ninth goal of the season to help the Cornell women's hockey team jump out to a first-period lead against a nationally-ranked opponent on Saturday, but Yale responded with four unanswered goals to secure a 4-1 victory at Ingalls Rink.

Graduate student Lindsay Browning made 28 saves and largely kept Cornell (7-8-1, 5-5-1 ECAC Hockey) in the game, but Yale (14-4-1, 8-4-1) was able to capitalize on odd-man situations to bring the Big Red's three-game winning streak to a close.

It took little time for Browning to establish a presence, thwarting a shorthanded breakaway chance by Tess Dettling. After Browning made a pair of saves of the Bulldogs' first power-play chance, the Big Red countered with Delianedis' strike at the 11:36 mark. Junior forwards Izzy Daniel and Gillis Frechette worked the puck along the right-wing half wall down to Delianedis, who approached the net from a sharp angle and beat Yale goaltender Gianna Meloni to the short side.

The Bulldogs regrouped over the intermission and took control of the run of play early in the second period. Rebecca Vanstone made a move to her backhand to slip a shot by Browning's blocker on a breakaway 5:27 into the middle frame, then Claire Dalton gave the hosts the lead 8:30 later by scooping in a rebound after Browning made a save on Elle Hartje's breakaway.

Yale then doubled its lead in rare fashion just 25 seconds into the third when Anna Bargman scored on a penalty shot. She later closed the scoring with an empty-net goal.

The Big Red was 2-for-2 in killing off power plays for Yale — which entered the game converting better than 30% of the time in such scenarios.

Cornell returns to action in short order, circling back to Ithaca for a makeup game against Clarkson at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Lynah Rink.
