STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – The Cornell men's track and field team turned in a solid showing at the Villanova Invitational, collecting seven individual event wins on Saturday at the Ocean Breeze Track and Field Complex in Staten Island, N.Y.
Two of such wins came in in the throwing events, where the Big Red claimed the top-two spots in both the shot put and weight throw. In the shot put, it was Brad Morell that posted the best throw of the day, recording a personal-best heave of 16.37m (53-08.50) to win the event. Ian Frost emerged victorious in the weight throw with his own personal-best, finishing first with a throw of 18.78m (61-07.50). Dan Mead (15.89m/52-01.75) notched a second-place finish in the shot put, while Phil Coppolino placed second in the weight throw with a personal-best distance of 17.28m (56-08.50).
Smith Charles came away as a double-winner on Saturday for the second time this season, winning both the 60-meter (6.84) and long jump (7.22m/23-08.25) competitions. His victory in the 60-meter was significant for a number of reasons. Not only does it leave Charles unbeaten in the event this season, but his time of 6.84 matches a personal-best and sits 10th all-time in the Big Red record books. Tony Bridges joined Charles in the top-three of the long jump, placing third with a leap of 6.75m (22-01.75).
Tomas Kersulis dropped time in the 200-meter for the third-straight meet, finishing second on Saturday with the third-fastest time in Cornell history (21.41). Led by Joshua Gittens, the Big Red went one-two in the 400-meter. Gittens was the first to cross the finish line in a personal-best 50.31, while Fabien De Silva followed in second with a time of 50.44.
Gittens and Kersulis teamed up with Christian Martin and Jack Daly in the 4x400-meter relay, and the team proved to be a winning combination, clocking the top time of 3:14.14. Martin and Daly also exceled in their individual events, with Martin finishing second in the 60-meter hurdles (8.05) and Daly winning his heat to finish fourth overall in the 500-meter (1:05.31).
Rhys Hammond cracked Cornell's all-time top-10 list in the 1,000-meter run, finishing the race in 2:24.39 to place second. He currently sits fourth all-time in the Big Red record books. Rishabh Prakash added a top-three showing in the mile, finishing third with a time of 4:12.03.
Otreyvien Taylor represented the Big Red well in the high jump, winning the event with a clearance of 2.00m (6-06.75) for his third victory of the season.
The Cornell men's track and field team will be back in action next weekend when it hosts its third home meet of the season, the Kane Invitational, on Saturday, Jan. 29 at 10 a.m. at Barton Hall in Ithaca, N.Y.
