PRINCETON, N.J. -- Two teams tied in the ECAC Hockey standings with identical records played an even game and ended in a tie as special teams ruled the night at Hobey Baker Rink on Friday as Cornell and Princeton ended 2-2. The Big Red moved to 8-8-2 (6-5-2 ECAC Hockey), while the Tigers ended the evening 8-8-4 (6-5-2 ECAC Hockey).
Princeton scored on its first and last power play opportunities and the Big Red scored twice in between with an extra skater. The Big Red held a narrow 33-27 edge in shots on goal, while the Tigers dominated the draw circle (37-18).
Izzy Daniel and
Kaitlin Jockims each tallied goals on the power play for the Big Red, with both shots coming from assists by
Rory Guilday and
Gillis Frechette. Lyndsay Browning made 25 saves between the pipes, while Rachel McQuigge had 31 stops for the Tigers, who got both goals off the stick of Dominique Cormier. McQuigge was forced to make 16 saves in the third period and overtime to get Princeton over the line.
The first period looked even on the ice and the score sheet as teams headed to the locker room knotted at 1-1. After the Tigers took a 1-0 lead on a Cormier score off a rebound on the power play, Daniel tied the score for the Big Red 10 minutes later with a snipe on assists from Guilday and Frechette. Princeton picked up a third power play opportunity late in the first and carried it 1:08 of the advantage into the second.
The second period saw a flurry of action for both teams, but neither team was able to capitalize despite 17 total shots on goal. Cornell had two point-blank chances turned away by McQuigge, while Browning stopped three quality chances by the Tigers as both teams attempted to enter the third ahead on the scoreboard.
Cornell had the better chances in the third, finally converting on a backhanded shot by Jockims with 6:04 to go on a slick feed by Frechette. The Tigers, however, struck back after drawing a penalty with just over two minutes remaining. The Tigers pulled McQuigge for the extra skater and it paid off, as Cormier cashed in to again tie the score with 1:56 remaining. A back-and-forth overtime couldn't decide it as neither team could find the back of the net in the final five minutes despite sustained pressure from the Big Red.
The Big Red will visit Quinnipiac in a game rescheduled to Sunday, Jan. 30 at noon.
