Box Score HAMDEN, Conn. – The Cornell women's hockey team traded scoring chances by the barrelful with Quinnipiac on Sunday afternoon and got a stellar 39-save performance from graduate student
Lindsay Browning, but the Bobcats' Logan Angers stopped all 26 shots she saw to backstop the hosts to a 3-0 victory at Frank Perrotti Jr. Arena.
It was evident from the start that the game would be a track meet on ice with plenty of physicality, given that no penalties were assessed until the final four minutes of the game. Senior forward
Samantha Burke had the first quality scoring chance of the game, forcing a save out of Anders on a two-on-one at the 1:58 mark. Three minutes later, Browning answered in kind by flipping out her right pad to kick away Lexie Adzija's attempt on a rebound from the top of the crease.
The scoreless first period led to Cornell (8-9-2, 6-6-2 ECAC Hockey) to come out on the front foot in the second period. Just 35 seconds into that frame, junior forward
Gillis Frechette entered the left circle on a two-on-one rush and made a perfect pass for junior forward
Izzy Daniel, but the ensuing shot slid just wide of the post. On the group's next shift, Frechette was in a nearly identical scenario – though this time she toe-dragged around the defender to set up a backhand shot from the top of the crease, only to have a backchecker's stick deflect the puck over the crossbar.
Quinnipiac (18-5-3, 10-4), which entered the weekend ranked seventh in the DCU/USCHO.com poll, then broke through at the 3:32 mark on Olivia Mobley's goal off the crossbar on a two-on-one rush. The Bobcats kept momentum for about 10 more minutes before two more golden opportunities for the Big Red. The first was a clean breakaway for Frechette, that ended with her deke sending Anders falling off her heels – but the forward's stuff attempt between the goaltender's legs hit her right pad. Just 35 seconds later, sophomore forward
Gabbie Rud's shot from the left circle hit the near post.
Less than a minute after Rud's opportunity, the Bobcats doubled the lead on Kendall Cooper's blast from the right point that slid through traffic and inside the far post. Quinnipiac closed the scoring with an empty-net goal on the power play with 2:50 left in the third.
The loss keeps Cornell in a tie for seventh place in the ECAC Hockey standings with Princeton, with both teams now having played 14 of its 22-game league schedule. Both teams have a five-point cushion and a game in hand on Rensselaer for the final playoff spots.
Cornell will have a quick turnaround to its next game, when it starts a six-game home stand over a stretch of just 12 days with a 7 p.m. Tuesday contest in ECAC Hockey play against St. Lawrence.
