ITHACA, N.Y. – Competing in their first indoor seasons collegiately, sophomores Shane Racey and Tomas Kersulis wasted little time engraving their names in Big Red history, both cracking Cornell's all-time top-10 lists at the men's track and field team's Southern Tier Invite on Saturday at Barton Hall in Ithaca, N.Y.
Racey cleared 16-09.50 (5.12m) to not only win the pole vault competition, but secure the fifth-best mark indoors all-time at Cornell. Kersulis emerged victorious in the 200-meter with the seventh-fastest time in the Big Red record books (21.76). This comes just one meet after Kersulis clocked the second-fastest 300-meter time (33.57) in Cornell history at the Greg Page Relays on Dec. 4, 2021.
Kersulis led a Cornell 200-meter squad that went 1-2-3 on Saturday, as freshman Domenic Barresi (22.21) and sophomore Joshua Gittens (22.88) followed in second and third, respectively. Barresi had a busy day, adding a second-place finish in the 60-meter (7.03) and joining freshman Jack Daly, freshman Tyler Dale, and junior Kareem Hill on the Big Red's 4x400-meter relay team that crossed the finish line first in 3:32.35.
Junior Smith Charles was a double event-winner for the Big Red at the Southern Tier Invite, winning both the 60-meter dash (6.99) and long jump (23-10.25/7.27m). Charles clocked a 6.95 in prelims of the 60-meter, the fastest time of all runners all day.
Charles wasn't the only one who found success in the long jump, however, as freshmen Curtis Weh (21-05.50/6.54m) and Josh Green (20-11.75/6.39m) placed second and third, respectively. Green posted a pair of top-three showings on the day, as his best finish came in the triple jump where he placed second (46-11.50/14.31m).
Senior Ian Frost (58-02.50/17.74m) and sophomore Brad Morell (53-01.00/16.18m) represented the Big Red well in the weight throw, going 1-2 with the top-two throws of the day. Freshman Otreyvien Taylor emerged victorious in the high jump after clearing 6-07.00 (2.01m), and junior Kyle Kimble added a victory in the 60-meter hurdles (8.50).
On the day, the Big Red won nine of the 10 events in which Cornell had student-athletes entered.
The Cornell men's track and field team will hit the road for the first time of the 2021-22 campaign when it heads to the Penn 10-Team Select on Jan. 15 in Staten Island, N.Y.
