Power Play Powers Big Red to Exhibition Win Over uOttawa

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Cornell men's hockey team scored four power-play goals to lead the Big Red to a 5-1 victory over the University of Ottawa on Saturday night at Lynah Rink in the program's first of two exhibitions.

"They did a pretty solid job," said Mike Schafer '86, the Jay R. Bloom '77 Head Coach of Men's Ice Hockey, regarding his team's power play units. "They got stagnant as the game was out of hand. That group faced a different type of penalty kill. Those guys did adjust very well as the game went on."

Ben Berard recorded three points to pace Cornell's offense. Jack Malone added a pair of goals for the victorious Big Red. Sam Malinski was the only other player to register a multi-point performance, scoring once and assisting on another.

Remington Keopple made a Cornell-best 11 saves as all three Big Red goalkeepers played 20 minutes apiece between the pipes. Ian Shane started for the Big Red and made four saves. Ryan McInchak stopped the only shot on goal he faced in the third period.

Cornell dominated play in the first period, outshooting the Gee-Gees 28-6, including a 13-4 mark in shots on goal. Ottawa did not generate their first shot on goal until the 10:22 mark of the period.

Ondrej Psenicka and Malone netted power-play goals in the first period to put the Big Red ahead 2-0.

Ottawa struck first in the second period when Anthony Poulin scored just 3:39 into the frame. The one-goal lead for the Big Red didn't last long as Malinski netted the third power-play goal of the night for Cornell, lasering a shot through traffic from the right side of the point.

Berard added his third point of the night just past the halfway point of the second period, netting the Big Red's fourth goal on the night with a man advantage.

Malone added an empty-net goal in the third period to give Cornell an insurance marker.

Cornell concluded the night with 79 shot attempts compared to uOttawa's 27.

Looking Ahead

Cornell will play its final exhibition on Thursday when the Big Red welcomes Guelph to Lynah Rink for a 7 p.m. faceoff. Game action between the Gryphons and Big Red will be broadcast on ESPN+.
