HAMDEN, Conn. – Maya Labad was one of three Quinnipiac players to register multi-point nights as the No. 7-ranked Bobcats posted a 4-1 victory over No. 8-ranked Cornell at M&T Bank Arena on Friday night.
Gillis Frechette continued her torrid start to the 2022-23 season, netting her Cornell-leading fourth goal of the year.
Deanna Fraser stopped 20 shots in the setback for the Big Red (2-1-0, 0-1-0 ECAC).
Madison Chantler (goal, assist) and Olivia Mobley (two assists) were the other Quinnipiac players with multiple points. Logan Angers made 24 saves for the Bobcats (8-0-0, 2-0-0 ECAC), who increased its season-long win streak to eight games.
"I thought we came out tentative and anxious and did not play our game," said
Doug Derraugh '91, the Everett Family Head Coach of Women's Hockey. "The second and third periods we responded well. We had our opportunities to tie the game, but did not convert."
Chantler opened the scoring before the midway point of the first period, lasering a shot from the right faceoff circle to the far corner. Shay Maloney registered the primary assist and Olivia Mobley was credited with a secondary helper.
Not even two minutes later, Maloney increased Quinnipiac's lead to 2-0 as she poked away at a loose puck in front of Fraser.
After killing a penalty that was called just five seconds into the second period, Frechette cut the Big Red deficit in half, getting a friendly ricochet off a Quinnipiac defender and past Angers.
Fraser was strong in the blue paint for Cornell in the second period, stopping all 11 Quinnipiac shots that were on goal in the frame.
Quinnipiac appeared to have extended its lead to two goals near the midpoint of the third period, but was waved off by one of the referees behind the net.
The Bobcats eventually increased its lead on a goal by Labad at the 15:33 mark of the period. Labad added an insurance marker depositing an empty-net goal with two seconds left.
