Van Gelder Scores Twice in #8 Women’s Hockey Win at #10 Princeton

PRINCETON, N.J. – Freshman Mckenna Van Gelder scored the first two goals of her collegiate career in a 3-1 victory for Cornell over Princeton in a battle of top-10 programs at Hobey Baker Memorial Rink on Saturday night.

Van Gelder scored the first two Cornell goals and Izzy Daniel netted an empty-net goal for the No. 8-ranked Big Red (3-1-0, 1-1-0 ECAC).

Joining Van Gelder in registering multiple points on the night was forward Gillis Frechette and defenseman Rory Guilday. Frechette assisted on the Big Red's first and third goals, while Guilday assisted on the latter two Cornell tallies.

Sophomore goaltender Deanna Fraser stopped a season-high 33 shots in the victory.

Emerson O'Leary scored the lone Tigers goal on the night as No. 10-ranked Princeton had a 25-save performance from Jennifer Olnowich.

Cornell opened the scoring in the first period with a power-play marker by Van Gelder. After the initial shot attempt by Lily Delianedis was saved by Olnowich, Van Gelder poked away at the loose puck to net her first collegiate goal. Gillis Frechette also was credited with an assist on the marker.
O'Leary netted the game-tying goal with just 1:13 left in the second period as her deke created separation to even the game.

Just past the halfway point of the third period, Cornell had a potential 2-on-1 opportunity, but Van Gelder elected to take a wrist shot from the left faceoff circle and hit the top-right corner of the goal to put the Big Red ahead.
Daniel added an insurance marker, netting an empty-net goal with 48 seconds left.

Looking Ahead

Cornell returns to Lynah Rink next weekend when it welcomes Empire State rivals St. Lawrence and Clarkson. Puck drop between the Big Red and Saints on Friday is slated for 6 p.m., while Saturday's game between Cornell and the Golden Knights is scheduled for 3 p.m. Both games will be broadcast on ESPN+.
