ITHACA, N.Y. – Cornell men's lacrosse celebrated the program and the success of the 2022 season with alumni weekend on October 1 and 2. During the festivities, the Richard M. Moran Head Coach of Men's Lacrosse,
Connor Buczek, named
Gavin Adler,
Chayse Ierlan, and
Michael Long captains for the 2023Â season.
Adler, who was also named defensive and team MVP during the weekend festivities, returns for his senior season after tying the most caused turnovers (34) by a Cornell player during his 2022 season. Adler is already tied for 10th in the Cornell record books for career caused turnovers (38). Adler also corralled 75 ground balls in 2022, the second most on the team. His performance earned him Inside Lacrosse Media First-Team All-American Honors and unanimous all-Ivy League first team honors.
Irelan returns for his senior season and second season as captain with the Big Red. Irelan's 2022 season performance earned him a spot in the Cornell record books, tallying 212 saves across the year, good for fifth-most in Big Red history. He posted a .526 save percentage across the season. Irelan even recorded a goal in the season off a long bomb from the Big Red goal that made its way down the whole field and found the back of the Ohio State net.
Long, a true-senior captain, tallied the second most goals (34) and most assists (32) by a returner in the 2022 season. Long knows how to capitalize in man-up situations, tallying a team-high five man-up goals across 2022. Long tallied 48 of his 66 points against top-15 ranked opponents in 2022 that included a season-high five goals against #5 Yale in the Ivy League tournament semi-final and a season-high eight points at a #5 Princeton.
In addition to naming the 2023 captains, Buczek also presented team awards at the Sunday luncheon. In all, 11 awards were presented, which were highlighted by a special moment during the Dave Friedlieb Memorial Award. An award typically presented annually by longtime radio voice of the Big Red, Barry Leonard, is presented to the person whose enthusiasm, assistance, interest and compassion for the Cornell Lacrosse team is greatly appreciated. This year, Buczek took over the presentation to award Leonard for his continued dedication and service to Cornell Lacrosse. Leonard will continue his work in the 2023 season, as he embarks on his 27th season with the Big Red.
