CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- The Cornell men's polo team improved to 3-1 on the season after splitting a pair of competitive matches at the Virginia Fall Tournament. The Big Red fell to the host Cavaliers 8-6 on Wednesday before rallying past SMU 9-7 on Friday.
Virginia scored the lone two goals of the fourth chukker to knock off the Big Red and hand Cornell its first loss of the season in the process.
Taylor Palacios scored three times,
Pablo Herrera posted two goals and
Benito Jaramillo Samper tallied once for the visitors.
In the second contest, SMU ran out to a 3-1 lead after the first chukker and was up 5-3 at the break, but a 6-2 second half for the Big Red allowed it to come out of the weekend with a split. Jaramillo Samper scored four of his five goals after the break, including the game-winner in the fourth. A 4-0 run that bridged the third and fourth chukker allowed Cornell to take its first lead of the day, then after SMU tied it up, the freshman from Ecuador posted the game winner. Besides Jaramillo Samper's five goals, Palacios had three and the ponies were credited with one.
Cornell will host Marlan Farm on Friday, Nov. 4 at 7 p.m. at Oxley Equestrian Center before heading to Boston for a pair of matches this weekend.
