ITHACA, N.Y. – Five different Cornell players scored and three goaltenders combined for a shutout in the Big Red's 6-0 exhibition victory over McGill at Lynah Rink on Friday evening.
Senior
Gillis Frechette scored twice to lead Cornell, while sophomore
Gabbie Rud (goal, assist) and freshman
Grace Dwyer (two assists) also posted multi-point nights.
Junior
Deanna Fraser started the game in net for the Big Red, making two saves in the opening 20 minutes. Sophomores
Belle Mende and
Brynn DuLac made three saves apiece during their 20-minute stints in goal.
"It looked like our first game of the year," said Doug Derraugh '91, The Everett Family Head Coach of Women's Ice Hockey. "There were a lot of positives, but not much flow to it."
Rud opened the scoring in the first period, sending a one-timed shot on a pass from
Mckenna Van Gelder past McGill goaltender Sophie Lajeunesse not even four minutes into the period.
Cornell scored three times in the second period, two of which came while being short-handed. Freshman
Georgia Schiff registered the first of two Big Red goals over 1:44. Schiff recorded the goal with an assist credited to fellow freshman,
Sarah MacEachern. Frechette followed with her first tally with assists from sophomore
Ashley Messier and Dwyer.
Sophomore
Kaitlin Jockims had the other short-handed goal for the Big Red in the second period, receiving a feed from Rud on a 2-on-0.
Senior
Ellie Zweber and Frechette added insurance markers in the third period to give Cornell its eighth consecutive exhibition win.
"I thought our first-year players performed well. They had to shake out some nerves early on, but overall, they did a lot of good things out there," Derraugh said. "Grace (
Grace Dwyer) was a force on the blue line. She has a real presence on the ice and will help us in both ends."
