Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Hansen's Record Day Lifts Men's Hoops Past Saint Francis (Pa.), 80-77

LORETTO, Pa. -- Junior Sean Hansen tied a school record by hitting all eight field goal attempts en route to a career high 26 points and Cornell escaped with an 80-77 win over Saint Francis (Pa.) on Monday evening at DeGol Arena. The Big Red improved to 2-1, while the Red Flash fell to 1-2.

Hansen doubled his previous career mark of 13 and added five rebounds, five assists, three steals and a blocked shot to lead the Big Red to the win. He made all eight field goals, including two 3-pointers, and hit 8-of-10 free throws in the win. He matched the existing record of shots without a miss in a game by a Big Red player, matching Jeff Foote's 2008 performance against Boston University and Errick Peck's 2013 effort at Penn.

Greg Dolan chipped in 18 points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals, with Isaiah Gray scoring 14 to go along with four boards. Max Watson was the fourth Big Red in double figures with 10.

Cornell held double figure leads in both halves, but trailed by one at the break and allowed the Red Flash to take a game-tying attempt at the buzzer in the second half, escaping with the victory.

Cornell shot 53 percent from the floor, including hitting 68 percent from inside the free-throw line. After entering the game averaging 17.5 3-pointers per game, the Big Red made just 5-of-20 from beyond the arc. The visitors had 18 assists to just 11 turnovers in the win.

Josh Cohen led Saint Francis with 24 points and added eight rebounds and four assists to lead four double figure scorers. Landon Moore had 15, Maxwell Land had 13 points and 11 boards and Marlon Hargis scored 12.

FIRST HALF

• Cornell led by as many as 14 points in the first half, but six turnovers and a cold stretch from beyond the arc let the home team back into the game.
• Only five Big Red players scored in the first 20 minutes, though Hansen netted 14 - a career high - and Gray had 13 with the duo combining to shoot 10-of-11 from the floor.
• The rest of the team was just 5-of-17 and 1-of-9 from beyond the arc.
• Saint Francis closed the half by making eight of its final nine shots in the half to finish on a 15-4 run.
• Cornell scored the game's first nine points, including seven by Gray on three drives to the basket, the last coming with a three-point play.
• Lead went to double digits after a Manon steal that resulted in a give-and-go fastbreak with Watson.
• Cornell led 14-6 seven minutes in as tempo slowed before Hansen banged home the team's first 3-pointer of the night to go back up double figures.
• Up to 14 when Gray's straight-line drive put him into double figures and made it 23-9.
• Saint Francis got back within 23-17 after an 8-0 run that included back-to-back 3-pointers, but Manon ended the run with a pull-up jumper from the free throw line.
• An 8-0 Red Flash run in just over a minute allowed the home team to get back within 35-33, then took its first lead on a 3-pointer by Hargis with under two minutes to play before halftime.
• It ended up as a 13-0 lead before the Big Red was able to get on the board
• Hansen's two free throws after a scoreless drought of 3:05 allowed Cornell ultimately to get back within a point at the break.

SECOND HALF

• Consecutive layups by Watson and Dolan put the Big Red back in the lead at 48-45 four minutes into the second half and never surrendered the lead.
• The game was far from over, however.
• A rebound on a missed free throw led to a dunk by Manon, who wasn't picked up and went coast-to-coast to put Cornell up 62-54.
• Williams, who was in foul trouble all game long and finished the game scoreless, fouled out with 8:14 left after playing just 11 minutes.
• Much like the first half, Cornell tried to pull away, going up 13 (70-57) with five minutes remaining.
• It was still a seven-point game with 70 seconds to go, but a three-point play by Moore made it a 76-72 contest with 35 seconds left.
• Cornell went just 4-of-9 from the free throw line in the final 44 seconds.
• After the Red Flash got within 79-77 with eight seconds remaining, Watson hit the second of two free throws for the final margin.
• A last-second 3-point attempt from midcourt fell short and Cornell hit the road with a road victory.
