PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- Cornell women's basketball fell to Rutgers 71-52 on Sunday, November 27. The Big Red effort was led by
Kaya Ingram and
Mia Beam, who each tallied 11 points.
Cornell was the first team on the board after a rare administrative technical foul was administered against Rutgers. Ingram drilled the awarded free throw to take a 1-0 lead before tip off. Rutgers opened the game clock with a 4-0 run before Ingram sunk another free throw to make it a two point game. Another Rutgers basket was followed by a three ball from senior
Ania McNicholas to bring the Red within one at 6-5.
Emily Pape was the next Big Red player to tally points. She hit a jumper with 5:04 remaining in the fourth to take a 7-6 lead for Cornell. The rest of the quarter remained back-and-forth and brought up a tied scoreline at 12 at the break.
Rutgers came out storming in the second, going on a 13-4 run in the first five minutes of play, leading to a 25-16 advantage for the Scarlet Knights. Both teams went cold for the next three minutes, each tallying zero points in the stretch. The Big Red broke the drought with a fast break three ball by Beam, but Rutgers was able to hold on to an eight point lead heading into the half, leading Cornell 29-21.
Rutgers began to expand the gap in the third, leading by as many as 17 at 42-25 with 4:35 remaining in the quarter. The Big Red closed on a 10-4 run to trail by just 11 at 46-35 after three.
Rutgers found a full rhythm through the fourth quarter, allowing just 10 points for the Big Red while tallying 29Â of their own.Â
