Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Men’s Hockey Scores Twice in Third Period to Draw with AIC

ITHACA, N.Y. – Nick DeSantis and Ondrej Psenicka scored third-period goals to avenge a 3-1 deficit and aid the Cornell men's hockey team to a 3-3 tie with AIC on Friday night at Lynah Rink.

Jack Malone and Max Andreev scored in the best-of-three shootout to give the Big Red the shootout victory.

DeSantis scored the first two goals for Cornell (8-5-1), while Psenicka netted the game-tying goal during an extra-attacker situation with 1:10 left in regulation.

Between the pipes, Cornell's Ian Shane stopped 19 shots in relief of Remington Keopple, who was pulled after allowing two goals in the opening four minutes of the game.

Nicholas Cardelli had a two-point night for the visiting Yellow Jackets (10-8-5), who had a 31-save performance from netminder Alexandros Aslanidis.

How It Happened

For the second time in as many nights, AIC scored the game's first two goals. Brian Kramer and Cardelli combined to net their markers in the game's first four minutes.

Kramer opened the scoring by cutting through Cornell's defense and sending a wrist shot from the low slot past Keopple.

Not even two minutes later, Cardelli took advantage of intercepting a Cornell pass in front of Keopple to give the Yellow Jackets an early two-goal lead.

DeSantis found the back of the net for the second time in the series, trimming the Big Red's deficit in half.

In stark contrast to the previous night's contest, AIC and Cornell did not find the back of the net in the middle stanza.

Cornell killed off all three of AIC's power-play opportunities in the second period.

AIC regained its two-goal lead early in the third period as the Yellow Jackets took advantage of an odd-man rush. A wrist shot from the left faceoff circle by Timofei Khokhlachev found its way past Shane, allowing the Yellow Jackets to take a 3-1 lead.

On its first of three power-play opportunities in the third period, DeSantis was able to cut into AIC's lead. A goalmouth scramble led to DeSantis punching the puck past Aslanidis.

Cornell continued its offensive domination in the third period but could not net the equalizing goal with Shane in the net.

With an extra attacker, Sam Malinski took a shot from the point that went wide of the goal. Psenicka pounced on the loose puck to the right of Aslanidis and pushed it past the Yellow Jackets goaltender to tie the game with 1:10 left.

The Big Red peppered AIC in shot attempts over the final 20 minutes of regulation, posting a 41-5 advantage in the category.

Compared to the final regulation period, neither team generated much offense in overtime, leading to a shootout.

Malone opened the scoring in the second round of the shootout, and Andreev solidified the victory with a goal in the third round. Shane stopped both shot attempts he faced.

Game Notes

• Friday was the third meeting between Cornell and AIC. The Big Red remains undefeated against the Yellow Jackets with its 2-0-1 record.

• Dating back to Cornell's game on Nov. 18 vs. Yale, Cornell has successfully killed off its opponents' last 20 power plays.

• Cornell had its seven-game losing streak in shootouts snapped on Friday. It was the Big Red's first win in a shootout since Dec. 29, 2013, when it defeated Maine at the Florida College Classic.

• With his first-period goal, DeSantis registered his first career point streak after posting two points in Thursday's victory over AIC.

• Seger increased his point streak to three games, his second three-game point streak of the season. The junior forward has had an assist in his last three games, marking the longest streak in his collegiate career.

• Psenicka has scored in each of his last two games, marking the fourth time in his career he has scored in back-to-back games.

• The extra-attacker goal by Cornell was the program's first since Psenicka also did so on Feb. 1, 2022, against Brown.

Looking Ahead

Cornell will head on the road for its first pair of true road games since mid-November when it takes on Union and RPI in its annual trip to the Capital Region. The two-game series in suburban Albany begins next Friday, Jan. 6, when the Big Red takes on the Dutchmen at Messa Rink at Achilles Center. Puck drop is slated for 7 p.m. Game action will be broadcast on ESPN+ as well as WHCU (870 AM, 97.7 FM) with Jason Weinstein on the call.
