ITHACA, N.Y. – The Cornell men's track and field team was dominant in its final meet before the 2022 Ivy League Indoor Heptagonal Championships, wracking up nine individual event wins at the Marc Deneault Memorial Invitational on Saturday at Barton Hall.
Among the most notable victories were big performances by a veteran in the shot put and a newcomer in the high jump. Senior thrower Dan Mead had a career day in the shot put, winning the event with a personal-best heave of 17.01m (55-09.75) to eclipse the 17-meter mark for the first time of his career. Mead's mark seeds him fifth in the Ivy League heading into Heps and improves him to eighth all-time in the Big Red record books.
Freshman high jumper Otreyvien Taylor also jumped into the top-five of the Ivy League performance list after winning the high jump with a personal-best clearance of 2.06m (6-09.00). The victory for Taylor marks his fourth of the season in the event, and he also looks toward Heps ranked fifth in the Ivy League.
Freshman Domenic Barresi had a strong day in the sprints, winning the 200-meter (22.13) and finishing second in the 60-meter (6.97) with his second sub-seven performance of the season. Sophomore Angus Dove picked up the victory in the 400-meter (49.50), while freshman Jack Daly won the 500-meter (1:06.27).
The Big Red's mid-distance crew illustrated its depth, going 1-2-4 in the 800-meter and claiming the top-four spots in the mile run. Junior Eric Eng picked up the victory for Cornell in the 800-meter in 1:56.02, and freshman Derek Amicon led the Big Red pack of milers with a winning time of 4:15.75.
Junior hurdler Christian Martin secured Cornell's final victory of the day on the track, winning the 60-meter hurdles in 8.06.
In the throwing circle, senior Ian Frost won the weight throw in his final tune-up before Ivies with a distance of 18.34m (60-02.00). Sophomore Brad Morell finished just behind Frost in second with a personal-best throw of 18.07m (59-03.50). The runner-up finish was one of two for Morell on the day, as he also finished second in the shot put with a mark of 15.82m (51-11.00).
The Cornell men's track and field team will compete on its biggest stage of the indoor season when it takes on the 2022 Ivy League Indoor Heptagonal Track and Field Championships on Feb. 26-27 at The Armory in New York.
