ITHACA, N.Y. – It was a highly successful meet all around for the Cornell women's track and field team, but multiple Big Red performances in the field events stood out at the Marc Deneault Memorial Invitational on Saturday at Barton Hall.
The high jump, pole vault, and shot put were three events in particular where the Big Red soared to new heights. The Big Red swept the top-three spots in the high jump, led by Marguerite Lorenzo's Ivy League-leading clearance of 1.80m (5-10.75) to win the event. The mark, which matches her career-best from the 2021-22 season opener at the Greg Page Relays, ranks second all-time in Cornell history. Sophomore Catalina Zaloj also cracked the Big Red's all-time top-10 list in the event, clearing a personal-best 1.72m (5-07.75) to finish second. Not only does the height place her in a tie for fifth on the Ivy League performance list, but it's also tied for sixth in Big Red history with teammate Margaux Rawson. Olivia Rodriguez completed the sweep in the event for Cornell, finishing third with a height of 1.68m (5-06.00).
In the pole vault, freshman Gabrielle Pack's standout rookie campaign continued, as she notched her sixth personal-best in seven meets this season, this time surpassing 13 feet for the first time of her career. Pack cleared 3.97m (13-00.25) to win the event, posting the fourth-highest height in Cornell history indoors and the fifth-highest mark in the Ivy League heading into Heps. Maria Siciliano finished one spot behind pack in second after clearing 3.71m (12-2.00).
Freshman Noelle Elkinton had a breakthrough performance in the shot put, eclipsing the 14-meter mark for the first time of her career and winning the event in the process. Her personal-best heave of 14.05m (46-01.25) etches her name on Cornell's all-time top-ten list, ranking ninth in the Big Red record books.
On the track, fellow-freshman Jada Smith notched her own personal-best, placing second in the 60-meter dash in 7.62. Not only does the mark improve her to ninth all-time in Cornell history, but it sits fifth on the Ivy League performance list with Heps on the horizon.
In addition to these impressive performances, the Big Red had five additional individual event wins on Saturday. Cornell had the top finisher in the 400-, 500-, and 600-meter runs, with Alexa Richardson winning the 400 (1:01.95), Nia Robinson taking the 500 (1:16.93), and Grace Michalowski (1:42.18) winning the 600. Richardson also added a second-place showing in the 200-meter (26.66).
Robinson joined Kayleigh Furth, Delaney Benedict, and Brooke Overholt in the 4x400-meter relay, as the team was a winning combination with a time of 3:48.83.
The Big Red's final victory of the day came in the triple jump, where Cassidy Cheesman came away with the win after leaping a personal-best 11.34m (37-02.50).
The Cornell women's track and field team will compete on its biggest stage of the indoor season yet when it takes on the 2022 Ivy League Indoor Heptagonal Track and Field Championships on Feb. 26-27 at The Armory in New York.
