LEESBURG, Fla. -- The Cornell softball team dropped a pair of contests to Power Five programs on Sunday afternoon on the final day of the Spring Games, falling to Iowa 9-0 in five innings before dropping a 3-0 decision to Rutgers. The Big Red fell to 1-4 on the young season.
The Big Red mustered only three hits on the afternoon against the powerful Big Ten pitching, but fought valiantly - even bringing the tying run to the plate in game two against Rutgers after breaking up a no-hit bid in the seventh.
Game two was scoreless through three, as Rutgers' Jaden Vickers set the Big Red down in order with seven strikeouts in her first time around the lineup.
Gabrielle Maday was game for Cornell, eventually going the distance and striking out five while scattering eight hits and allowing the three runs to take the hard-luck loss.
McKinney broke up Vickers' no-hitter with two outs in the seventh with her single to left on an 0-2 count. That brought the tying run to the plate, but Vickers capped her afternoon with her 14th strikeout of the day to end it. She improved to 7-1 with the one-hit shutout.
Cornell collected two hits in the opener, with
Emma Antich and
Lilly Travieso each finding base safely.
Mia Burd and Maday surrendered eight combined earned runs over their four innings of work in the circle.
Iowa's Denali Loecker was 2-for-2 with a double and three RBI at the plate and allowed just two hits in four shutout innings in the circle. Sophia Maras and Nia Carter had two hits apiece and combined to score five runs. In all, the top four hitters in the Hawkeyes' lineup went 7-for-11 with six runs scored and eight RBI. Devyn Greer pitched the fifth, hurling a perfect inning and striking out two to close it out.
After a week off, the Big Red will travel to Emmitsburg, Md. for four games, two against host Mount St. Mary's and two others against Morgan State on Saturday and Sunday, March 12 and 13th.
