Third Quarter Spurt Sends UConn Past Women's Lacrosse, 20-14

ITHACA, N.Y. -- UConn scored six consecutive goals to open the second half and Cornell never recovered as the Huskies topped the Big Red 20-14 on Sunday afternoon at Morrone Stadium. UConn improved to 6-1 with its fifth consecutive win, while Cornell fell to 3-3.

Landyn White made 13 saves for UConn and Lia LaPrise had an eight-point afternoon with six goals and two assists for the home team. Sydney Watson scored four goals with two assists and won nine draws with a pair of caused turnovers in the win. Kate Shaffer scored three goals and assisted on two others, while Grace Coon posted a hat trick. UConn held a 40-36 edge in shots and successfully cleared the ball in each of its 23 opportunities.

Annie Thomas tied her own single-game school record with 11 draw control wins as the Big Red held a 22-15 edge at the draw circle. Hilary Hoover added five. Amanda Cramer led the offense with four goals, three draws and three ground balls.  Katie Castiello had two goals and an assist and both Shannon Brazier and Genevieve DeWinter scored twice. DeWinter added two caused turnovers and four ground balls. Caitlin Slaminko rounded out the Big Red players with multi-point games with a goal and an assist. Olivia Wall joined DeWinter with two caused turnovers in front of Katie McGahan and Ellie Horner. Both goalkeepers made four saves apiece.

• The Big Red will return home for its Ivy League home opener against Columbia on Saturday, March 19 at 3 p.m. at Schoellkopf Field.
