ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Cornell women's lacrosse team matched a school record for goals in a game on the strength of 13 different scorers as the Big Red evened its Ivy League record with a 23-8 victory over Columbia on Saturday afternoon at Schoellkopf Field. The Big Red improved to 4-3 (1-1 Ivy), while the Lions slipped to 2-6 (0-2 Ivy).
Cornell scored the game's first four goals, got to a running clock midway through the second quarter and never looked back, rolling to its 25th straight win without a loss against the Lions all-time. The final goal, scored just before the final horn by
Lauren Riker, matched the record of 23 goals in a game previously reached against California on March 29, 2015 and equalled vs. Binghamton on March 27, 2019. The squad's 32 points is the fourth-most in a single game, and its 19 draw controls sits ninth all-time.
Katie Castiello had three goals, three assists, three ground balls and three caused turnovers while playing just half the game, while
Amanda Cramer had four goals and an assist with
Genevieve DeWinter scored three to go along with an assist. Also registering multi-point days on the offensive end were
Sophie Alois (two goals, one assist),
Shannon Brazier (two goals),
Mia DiChiara (two goals) and
Josie Vogel (one goal, one assist).
Annie Thomas registered six draw controls, all coming in the first 20 minutes, as the Big Red liberally went to the bench early in the first half. Cornell utilized four goalkeepers, with
Katie McGahan picking up the win with three goals. The graduate student and team captain picked up her 22nd career victory between the pipes.
Payton Lill had two goals and both Kate Kelly and Kayla Nitahara scored a goal with an assist for the Lions. Both Katie Lutz and Lauren Yun recorded four draw controls. In goal, Ryan Schlageter and Simone Koryszewski combined for five saves in the loss.
The Big Red held a 40-19 edge in shots, including 33-13 over the first three quarters, and was perfect in 14 clearing attempts while forcing seven Lion miscues with its ride. The Big Red held advantage in ground balls (18-12) and draw controls (19-13).
