Box Score ITHACA, N.Y. – Junior
Ryan Ross was 2-for-5 with a double, a home run and three RBI, but the Cornell baseball team saw a tight game in the sixth inning slip away on Friday with Richmond pulling away for a 15-6 victory at Pitt Field.
The Spiders plated four runs over the first two innings before
Chris Ellison largely minimized the damage over the next three innings to allow the Big Red bats to pull the visitors back into the game. Ross hit a solo home run in the fourth to start the scoring for Cornell (2-7), which then pushed across an unearned run in the fifth.
Freshman
Jakobi Davis drilled a two-run triple into the gap in left center with two out in the top of the sixth to cut the Big Red's deficit to 5-4. Junior
Wils Guy worked a walk to put the go-ahead run on base and chase Richmond (11-4) starter Jeremy Neff, but reliever Josh Willits induced a strikeout to get out of the jam.
The Spiders then struck for 10 more runs over their final three innings at the plate to put the game away. The Big Red got two more runs in the ninth, driven in by Ross' double with the bases loaded. It continues a remarkable start to the season for Ross in that all six of his hits through 20 at-bats have gone for extra bases – two doubles, two triples and two home runs.
In addition to his triple, Davis added a single and a walk with a run scored in a 2-for-2 day. Junior
Joe Hollerbach – who entered the day ranked second nationally with a .531 average – lined a leadoff single through the left side of the infield in the seventh inning to extend his hitting streak to seven games.
The teams are scheduled to square off in the middle game of the three-game series at 1 p.m. Saturday, with junior left-hander
Spencer Edwards slated to start for the Big Red.
