Sailing Records Pair of Top Five Weekend Finishes

ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Cornell sailing team took fifth at the high-powered St. Mary's College Women's Fleet Race and earned a winning record at the Washington College Team Race as the Big Red collected two more top five regatta finishes.

The Big Red finished ahead of nationally ranked schools Bowdoin (No. 15), George Washington (No. 16), Old Dominion (No. 17), St. Mary's (MD) (No. 18) and South Florida (No. 20) at the fleet race, finishing the two-day regatta with 275 points, just six behind fourth-place Tufts. JJ Smith and Sophia Fogarty sailed A division to fourth place with two race wins and seven top five finishes among the 18 races on the weekend. The B division entry was sixth with four top five efforts and three races in the top three. Meredith Moran (races 1-12, 14-18) and Lucija Ruzevic (13) skippered B division with Sophia Duffy (races 1-6, 11-13) and Louisa Bjerke (5-10, 13-18) as the crew.

In team race action, the Big Red rebounded from a 2-3 start in the first round to go 3-2 in each of the final two. All three rounds included wins over Princeton and Washington College, while the Big Red picked off Christopher Newport in round two and Navy in round three, handing the Midshipmen one of its three losses on the weekend. Brooke Shachoy and Amelia Neuman, Lillian Myers and Lilly Bjerke, and Bridget Green and Jana Laurendeau sailed the three boats during the weekend, with Lauren Ehnot also splitting time skippering the first and second boats.

Cornell will continue its spring season when it competes for hte Vietor Tropjhy in New London, Conn., as well as the Duplin Women's Team Race in Medford, Mass. on March 26-27.
