Softball Walks Off Game Two For Split With Columbia

ITHACA, N.Y. -- Sophomore Marissa Zorrilla's first career hit on Niemand*Robison Field was nearly two years in the making, but her bloop into center set off a celebration as the Cornell softball team split a Friday afternoon doubleheader in its Ivy League opener, dropping an 11-0 contest in five innings in the opener, then topping the Lions 5-4 in the nightcap. Cornell improved to 4-10 (1-1 Ivy), while the Lions ended their day 5-15 (3-2 Ivy) with a deciding game three to be played on Saturday at 12:30 p.m.

Zorrilla's hit scored pinch-runner Julie Hilcken from second base with two outs in the bottom oif the seventh, completing a rally from down 4-0 in the second. Emily McKinney walked with one out, advanced to second on a Celia Macari single - also her first career hit at home - and ended two batters later on the sophomore's run-scoring single.

That made a winner of Mia Burd, who scattered six hits and didn't surrender an earned run in hurling a complete game to improve to 4-2. She needed just 86 pitched to get there, making just one mistake - a grand slam home run to Jaden Hill after a Big Red error kep the inning alive. Burd standed eight runners in the contest.

Olivia Rooney was 2-for-4 with a run scored and Hanna Crist answered the Lions' four-run second with a three-run shot in the bottom of the inning to give Cornell new life. To that point, the Big Red had been outscored 15-0 on the day in seven innings.

Besides Zorrilla's game-winning hit, she also walked twice and scored once.

Game two was completely different than the first game, when Jordan Hill struck out six and allowed just one hit over 5.0 innings to pick up her third win of the season. Maria Pagane was 2-for-4 with two home runs and five RBI, while Bubba Gelaves was 2-for-2 with a homer, two RBI, a walk and two runs scored. The Lions broke open a 1-1 game after three innings with an eight-run explosion in the fourth and two more in the fifth to earn the victory.

Emma Antich had the lone hit for the Big Red with a third-inning single in the loss. Mia Burd came out of the bullpen and allowed two runs over the final 1.1 innings of work.
