Harvard's Late Rally Completes Weekend Sweep of Baseball

ITHACA, N.Y. -- Harvard scored 10 runs in the final three frames to rally past Cornell 12-11 on Saturday afternoon at Hoy Field to complete a three-game Ivy League series sweep. The Big Red fell to 3-11 (0-3 Ivy), while the Crimson improved to 11-7 (3-0 Ivy).

A four-run ninth inning for the Crimson allowed the visitors to come all the way back from an 8-2 deficit, that coming after three run outbursts in both the seventh and eighth innings. Cornell answered in the bottom half of the frames, but couldn't find the tying run in the ninth as Will Jacobsen struck out two and sat the Big Red down in order to close out the win.

It was Chris Snopek's single to rightfield that proved to be the game winner after Ben Rounds tied it up in the final frame with a single of his own, Both hitters had a pair of safeties and combined to drive in seven of Harvard's 11 runs. Jacobsen, who picked up the save in the ninth, was 3-for-5 and scored twice, while Peter Levin also was 3-for-5 on the afternoon. In all, Harvard had 13 hits.

Max Jensen and Jakobi Davis each had two hits, but the Big Red also took advantage of 11 Harvard walks and four hit batsmen. Jensen drove in three runs with a double and four players scored twice apiece, including Wils Guy who reached base four times on a hit and three walks. Luke Yachinich went the first six innings on the mound, striking out six and scattering six hits while allowing just two earned runs.

Cornell scored two in the first on a run-scoring triple by Nathan Waugh and a single by Austin Flematti. It stayed that was until the Crimson tied it in the third, but a three-run double to center by Jensen in the fifth and three runs scored on separate wild pitches to go up 8-2 after six.

Harvard's 10 runs came on eight hits, three walks, two hit batsmen and a catcher's interference. It was four ninth-inning hits that allowed the Crimson to complete the comeback, including the consecutive hits by Rounds and Snopek.

Cornell put the tying run on base with two outs in the ninth, but couldn't get him past first as the Crimson closed it out.

The Big Red returns to action when Ivy foe Yale visits Hoy Field for a three-game set beginning on Saturday, April 2 at 11:30 a.m.
