3/6/2022 9:28:00 PM

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 COLUMBIA, Md. – The Cornell baseball team won the completion of the middle game of its three-game series against Coppin State on Sunday afternoon, 14-5, before the Eagles avoided a sweep with a 21-2 victory in the finale at Blandair Park.

Junior Joe Hollerbach bashed nine hits in the series with two home runs, and he hit for the cycle in a second game that was played primarily late Saturday afternoon before the field's lighting went out and forced play to be suspended until Sunday.

Cornell (2-4) returns to Maryland for three more games next weekend, tangling with Maryland once before taking on Georgetown twice.

GAME 2: Cornell 14, Coppin State 5
The Eagles jumped out to a three-run lead in the first inning before junior starter Spencer Edwards settled in and kept the hosts of the board for the final five innings of his quality start.

Cornell took the lead in the fifth inning. With the bases loaded and one out, freshman Jakobi Davis hit a two-run single to center, then Hollerbach's homer to center field plated three more. Davis finished the game 3-for-6 with three RBIs.

Graduate student Jason Apostle helped expand the lead, helping to set the stage for a two-run sixth inning with a double. Apostle's second home run of his collegiate career, and first since 2018, helped spark the Big Red's six-run ninth inning to put the game out of reach.

Edwards earned the win with eight strikeouts over six innings, with one of the three runs conceded coming unearned. Senior William Gilbert recorded his first collegiate save in unique fashion, first taking the mound to induce the final out of the eighth inning on Saturday evening before returning to get the final three outs on Sunday.

GAME 3: Coppin State 21, Cornell 2
The Eagles plated 10 runs over the first four innings before the Big Red countered in the sixth.Hollerbach homered to right with one out, then sophomore Nathan Waugh hit his first collegiate home run two batters later.

Waugh's blast ended the day for Coppin starter Jordan Hamberg, who earned the win by tossing 5.2 innings with 10 strikeouts.

Freshman John Quinlan later delivered a pinch-hit double in his first collegiate at-bat.
