ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Cornell sailing team readied for championship season with a pair of sixth-place finishes at separate races in New London, Conn. hosted by Coast Guard and Connecticut College. The Big Red was sixth of 15 teams at the Coast Guard's Emily Wick Fleet Race and sixth of nine teams at Connecticut College's Camel Women's Team Race.
At the Emily Wick, the Big Red finished just four points out of a top five finish with 204 after 15 races. A Division took eighth with JJ Smith and
Sophia Fogarty competing with six top five finishes, including three second place efforts over the final six races on the weekend. B Division, composed of
Meredith Moran and
Lucija Ruzevic as skipper and
Lilly Bjerke as crew, was more consistently at the top throughout the two days, with nine top five race finishes and finishing in the top two in three of the final four starts, including a win in race 15.
Cornell was 8-8 at the Camel Team Race with wins over Dartmouth and Harvard. Skippers included
Brooke Shachoy,
Lauren Ehnot and
Bridget Green, with
Amelia Neumann,
Gabbi DelBello and
Jana Laurendeau competing as crew. The Big Red went 3-5 in the first round with victories over Connecticut College, Roger Williams and Tufts. The second round saw Cornell go 5-3, adding Harvard and Dartmouth to its win list. That wasn't enough to get the Big Red to the event's final four.
The Big Red will host the MAISA Spring Women's Championship on Saturday and Sunday, April 16-17 out of the Merrill Family Sailing Center.
