PRINCETON, N.J. -- Princeton scored five unearned runs in the decisive fourth inning and claimed an Ivy League series win after a 10-6 victory over Cornell baseball on Sunday afternoon at Clarke Field. Cornell fell to 7-14 (3-6 Ivy), while the Tigers improved to 4-21 (2-8 Ivy).
Nathan Waugh was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and both
Max Jensen and
Sam Kaplan had two hits apiece as Cornell had 10 for the game.
Ryan Porter drove in two runs, one with a walk and another with a single, as the Big Red did all its offensive damage in the second and third innings.
Chris Ellison pitched the final 3.1 innings, surrendering three hits and striking out two to allow the Big Red an opportunity to rally late.
A three-run homer by Princeton's Matt Scannell in the first inning put the Tigers up early, but Cornell answered with three apiece in both the second and third to tie, then take a 6-3 lead. A pair of bases loaded walks and a fielder's choice scored the tying runs, while the Big Red strung together five hits, including a RBI double by
Max Jensen amd consecutive run-scoring hits by Kaplan and Porter double up Princeton.
The Big Red had two of its four errors during the Tigers' five-run fourth, allowing the home team to take the lead for good. The big blows came on a bases loaded triple by Noah Granet, following immediately by a two-run homer by Nadir Lewis to put Princeton up 8-6. The Tigers scored two more insurance runs in the fifth, but Jason Ramirez assured they wouldn't need them. He picked up the save with four stellar innings, striking out four and allowing just two hits. Andrew D'Alessio picked up the win after allowing six Big Red runs over the first 5.0 frames.
Granet ended the day 2-for-4 with a triple and five RBI for the Tigers, who had 11 hits. Big Red pitchers struck out 11, including six in 3.2 innings of relief work by
Braden Mack who was victimized by all five unearned runs scored against the visitors in the fourth inning.
Cornell will play a midweek contest at Binghamton on Tuesday, April 12 at 6:30 p.m.
