PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The 59th-ranked Cornell men's tennis team swept through Brown, picking up a 4-0 win over the Bears on Sunday afternoon at the Brown Indoor Tennis Courts. The Big Red improved to 16-6 (3-1 Ivy), while the Bears slipped to 9-13 (0-5 Ivy).
The win keeps the Big Red in the mix for the Ivy League title, a game behind Ivy unbeaten Harvard (5-0). Cornell joins Columbia (3-1) and one of next weekend's opponents, Penn, with one conference loss. The other of next weekend's opponents, Princeton, is 3-2 and a game behind the Big Red in the standings.
Cornell earned straight sets victories at No. 1, 2 and 6 on the ladder, with
Alafia Ayeni and Vlad Melnic picking up a doubles victory at No. 1 to go along with their singles wins. Ayeni defeated Ching Lam 6-4, 6-3 in the top spot, with Melnic earning a victory over Matthew Mu by a 6-2, 6-3 margin.
Nathan Mao's 6-3, 6-0 victory in the final spot in the lineup clinched the squad's 16th victory.
The Big Red will visit No. 39 Princeton on Friday, April 22 at 2 p.m., then returns home to face No. 42 Penn on Sunday, April 24 at 1 p.m.
