PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- Penn scored 11 runs in the sixth inning to rally past Cornell 15-6 on Easter Sunday afternoon at Meiklejohn Stadium. The Quakers concluded the weekend with a 22-9 (9-2 Ivy) record, while the Big Red fell to 7-18 (3-9 Ivy).
Sam Kaplan homered and both
Max Jensen and
Ryan Ross had two hits apiece, with Jensen adding a double, a walk and two runs scored. Five different Penn batters had multiple hits, with Tommy Courtney going 3-for-5 with a double and two RBI. Seth Werchan homered, walked three times and scored four runs and Ben Miller reached base in all five plate appearances with a 2-for-2 day with three walks.
Penn struck first two two runs in the first, but the next five runs on the board belonged to the Big Red and it was eventually 6-3 Cornell after five innings.
Sam Kaplan's three-run homer in the fourth was the big blow, putting the Big Red in the lead.
The Quakers plated 11 in the sixth to grab the lead back and eventually cruise to the win. Werchan's two-run homer made it 6-5, and two-run hits by Jackson Appel and Wyastt Henseler put the home team up for good.
The Quakers' pitching staff combined for 14 strikeouts, including nine by Owen Coady in the final five frames in relief. He scattered three hits and allowed just one run in improving to 4-0 on the year.
The Big Red will attempt to snap a five-game skid when it welcomes Binghamton to Hoy Field on Wednesday, April 20 at 3:30 p.m.
