Dartmouth Earns Series Win With 10-8 Victory Over Baseball

ITHACA, N.Y. -- Dartmouth pounded out 16 hits and rallied from an early four-run deficit to complete the series win over Cornell baseball, pulling out a 10-8 victory on Sunday afternoon at Hoy Field. The Big Green improved to 19-14 (10-5 Ivy), while the Big Red fell to 9-20 (4-11 Ivy).

Ryan Porter was 3-for-5 with a pair of RBI, Max Jensen was 2-for-4 with a walk and a pair of runs scored and Sam Kaplan hit his third homer in his past two contests to lead a Big Red offense that piled up 11 total hits.

Four different Dartmouth players had three hits apiece, including Max Zajec, who finished a double shy of the cycle. Connor Bertsch also homered, while Justin Murray was 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles. Cole Roland picked up the win on the mound with 5.0 innings of four-hit baseball with one earned run allowed and six strikeouts. Jack Metzger earned his fifth save of the campaign with two innings of one-hit pitching with a pair of strikeouts.

It was 4-0 after three innings and 7-2 after four innings as Cornell scored in each frame. The initial run scored on a wild pitch, but a two-run single by Porter in the second and an RBI hit by Austin Flematti an inning later made it a four-run game.

Dartmouth picked up three runs in the fourth, but Kaplan's pop up to right was misplayed for an error and he trucked all the way around for a four-base error, with both Jensen and Joe Hollerbach scoring in front of him to get those runs back.

A five-run fourth by the Big Green evened the score at 7-7, with the visitors taking the lead an inning later when Zajec tripled to drive in a run. He was thrown out at home, preventing more damage.

Kaplan evened the score in the seventh when he drove a 2-1 pitch over the right field fence for his third homer of the series and sixth of the year, but Dartmouth scored on a wild pitch in the eighth and grabbed an insurance run in the ninth to give Dartmouth the series win.

Cornell will celebrate 100 years of baseball at Hoy Field and its senior class when Columbia comes to town for a three-game series beginning on Saturday, April 30 at 11:30 a.m.
