Lightweight Rowing Sweeps Penn To Retain Matthews Trophy, Leonard Cup

ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Cornell lightweight rowing team captured the Matthews Trophy and the Leonard Cup on Saturday morning on Cayuga Lake, sweeping Penn in the oldest cup race it competes for.

The varsity eight crossed the line more than four and a half seconds ahead of the Quakers over the 2,000 meter course in exceptional race conditions
 
"Kicking off the season with a formidable opponent like the Quakers has defined our early season for decades – it is league racing at its best. And no surprise the Penn Quakers, led by head coach Colin Farrell '05, delivered tenacious racing which underscored our results," said Chris Kerber, The Henry E. Bartels '48, Head Coach of Men's Lightweight Rowing. 
Distance: 2000 meters
Conditions: Little to no wind throughout entire racing program - very light current.
