KINGS POINT, N.Y. -- The Cornell sailing team placed seventh at America Trophy Regatta, MAISA's Open Dingthy Championship, that concluded on Sunday afternoon. The top two teams wrapped up automatic bids to the coed nationals, leaving the Big Red to await word on a possible at-large bid. Additionally,
Gabbi DelBello and
Amelia Neumann were named to the All-MAISA crew and Big Red assistant coach
Daisy Holthus was named the MAISA Coach of the Year.
Cornell sat as low as 14th during the competition and was 11th entering Sunday, climbing to a best-ever finish of seventh at the championship since the women were elevated to varsity status.
In A Division,
Brooke Shachoy (races 1-7, 11) and
Meredith Moran (races 8-10, 12-13) skippered the Big Red to 10th with
Gabbi DelBello (races 1-2), Rocco Cappetta (races 3-4) and
Amelia Neumann (races 5-13) running the crew spots. Cornell posted five top 10 efforts on the weekend, including winning Sunday's fifth race
B Division was the moving engine, with
Lillian Myers skippering with Neumann (races 1-4) and DelBello (races 5-13) as crew and Max Charlamb as a reserve to sixth place. The Big Red had 12 top 10 finishes in 13 weekend races, including four in the top five and two runner-up efforts.
The Big Red will await word on a bid to coed nationals, but is locked in to compete at the Women's National Championship beginning on May 23 in New Orleans, La.
