Gavin Adler was named to Inside Lacrosse's All-America first team and attackers
John Piatelli and
CJ Kirst were chosen to the honorable mention team. The team is voted on by members of the media.
Adler was one of four unanimous choices to the first team, joining Maryland's Logan Wisnauskas and midfielders Sam Handley from Penn and Graham Bundy Jr. from Georgetown. Adler has been sensational with the pole, leading the team and the conference in caused turnovers (28) and ranking second on the squad in ground balls (58). He averaged 2.5 caused turnovers in Ivy League games and has closed the season strong with 12 caused turnovers and 18 ground balls in games against Princeton, Yale and Ohio State. Adler spearheads a defense that has limited six opponents to single digit goals this season and has limited some of the nation's top scorers this year. He matched up with five of the top 20 goal scorers this season, holding each below his average. Matt Brandau of Yale, who ranks second nationally at 3.50 goals per game, had just two goals in two games against the Big Red. Adler was an honorable mention All-American from Inside Lacrosse in 2020.
Ivy League Rookie of the Year
CJ Kirst is second on the team in points (71), goals (49) and assists (22), as well as third in ground balls (42). His points total ranks second on the list of Big Red rookies, behind only
Jeff Teat in 2017 (33-39-72). The sophomore had seven points (four goals, three assists) in his collegiate debut against UAlbany and notched eight points (six goals, two assists) vs. Syracuse and has multiple points in 14 of his 16 games this year with 10 hat tricks. Kirst tied a single-game school record in NCAA play with his seven goals in the first round win over Ohio State.
Piatelli was a first-team All-Ivy selection and a finalist for the Senior CLASS Award while continuing to climb Cornell's all-time scoring lists. The nation's leader in goals per game (3.56) and ranking second in goals per game (3.57) and points per game (4.57). He paced the Big Red in goals per game in league contests (3.67) and has multiple point contests in all 16 contests. Piatelli has 11 games with at least three goals with career high nine point efforts against both Colgate and Syracuse on the road. He enters the NCAA quarterfinals with 139 goals fifth all-time at Cornell) and 185 points (sixth) in his career. Piatelli has done so despite playing just five games during his junior year in a COVID-shortened season.
The All-America trio will lead the Big Red into the NCAA quarterfinals against Delaware on Sunday, May 22 at 12 p.m. at Ohio Stadium in Columbus, Ohio. The contest will be broadcast live on ESPNU.
