NEW ORLEANS, La. -- The Cornell sailing team placed 13th at the 2022 ICSA Open Western Semifinal after completing day two of competition. The top nine among the 18-team field advanced to Saturday's finals.
The teams completed 11 total rotations over two days of sailing out of the Southern Yacht Club on Lake Pontchartrain. Cornell's 233 points allowed it to finish three spots ahead of its seed (16) entering the championship.
Cornell climbed to 11th place on Friday and get within 28 points of qualifying, but ran out of time after just five races were completed.
A Division saw
Lillian Myers and and
Jana Laurendeau posted three top 10 finishes in five Friday races.
Bridget Green skippered the first four races with Rocco Cappetta as crew on the final day, grabbing a second place finish in its third start, before
Brooke Shachoy and
Amelia Neumann took over for the final race.
The Big Red ended day one in 13th with 131 points after six rotations and was 28 points out of ninth for the last qualifying spot for the finals.
In A Division, Cornell was 11th overall with Moran (races 1-4) and Myers (races 5-6) skippering the entry with Neumann (races 1-4) and DelBello (races 5-6) making up the crew. The change shook up the Big Red, winning its first race with the adjusted lineup.
In B division, Green and DelBello had the first two races with Shachoy and Neumann teaming up for the final four of the day. Like in A division, Cornell took advantage of its lineup switch with a big finish, taking a fourth-place effort in the third race of the day.
The Big Red women will begin its championship regatta on Monday, May 23.
