Sailing Surges To Eighth At Women's National Championship

5/26/2022 7:48:00 PM

NEW ORLEANS, La. -- The Cornell sailing team climbed 10 spots all the way to eighth in the final standings after a weather-shortened Women's Dinghy National Championship on Thursday on Lake Ponchantrain. The Big Red improved six spots after day one and 10 spots from its initial start after the first rotation.

B Division took fourth among 18 teams, with Lillian Myers (race 1) and Bridget Green (races 2-11) as skipper and Jana Laurendeau (race 1) and Gabbi DelBello (races 2-11) crewing the Big Red's entry. The group had eight consecutive top eight finishes to close out the regatta and allow Cornell to climb.

MAISA Sailor of the Year Brooke Shachoy (races 1-10) along with Meredith Moran (race 11) skippered A Division, with Lucija Ruzevic (races 1-2) and Amelia Neumann (races 3-11) taking it home as crew.

The teams only got four rotations in on Wednesday, though Cornell finished strong with a fifth-place effort in B division in the day's final race top hop up two spots to 14th. Over its first seven starts, the Big Red finished no higher than 10th. The Big Red was on course side when racing began, an ominous beginning that put Cornell last among the 18 teams right from the start. It began to climb out of the hole, but weather and time didn't cooperate on Wednesday.

Thursday saw the Big Red surge led by the racing in B Division.

A Division had four top 10 finishes on Thursday, bettering its effort from an abbreviated day one that saw just four rotations completed. But it was B Division and its six top five efforts that allowed Cornell the climb.
