Hammond Qualifies For NCAAs in the 1500 As Men's Track & Field Closes East Regional Competition

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Sophomore Rhys Hammond earned a spot at the 2022 NCAA Championships in the 1,500 meters with a strong close as the Big Red men's track and field team closed out competition at the NCAA Preliminary East Round at the Robert C. Haugh Complex in Bloomington, Ind.

Hammond qualified with a personal-best time of 3:41.69, finishing fourth in his heat and 13th overall. His final kick advanced him to Eugene, as he moved up from 11th to fourth with a 55.75 - the second fastest final 400 in the heat. spots over the final 400 meters to advance. Hammond's mark ranks No. 2 all-time for the Big Red and was three full seconds faster than his first round time. He entered the meet seeded 33rd.

Christian Martin closed out his season by finishing 23rd in the 110m hurdles in a time of 14.18. The Heps champion Christian Martin was seeded 39th overall, but qualified with a season-best time of 13.82 in the first round to advance him to Friday. The top 12 runners reached nationals.

Rishabh Prakash took 16th in his 24-runner heat in the 5,000 meters, crossing the tape in 14:12.02. He passed three runners on the final lap, improving just just inside the top 20.
