WEST WINDSOR, N.J. -- The Cornell men's lightweight rowing team took fifth in the varsity eight race as competition concluded at the 119th edition of the annual IRA Regatta on Mercer Lake on Sunday afternoon.
Cornell was fifth out of the gates and at every marker, ultimately pulling away from sixth-place Princeton, but couldn't chase down any of the boats ahead of it. Columbia (5:56.35) won the lightweight title after finishing in 5:56.35, nearly seven seconds ahead of the Big Red (6:03.11).
The second varsity eight crossed the 2000-meter line second and first among Ivy schools in 6:07.88, just behind Navy. The Big Red made a late charge over the final 1,000 meters, moving from fifth all the way to second over 500 meters of the course and getting up to challenge the Midshipmen late, with its 6:07.88 two-and-a-half second behind Navy. The lightweight fours, meanwhile, finished sixth in 6:30.10 to round out the team's lineup.
