Rhys Hammond broke a 29-year-old school record in the 1,500 meters in finishing 17th at the 2022 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championship on Wednesday afternoon at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. The run closed an outstanding season with honorable mention All-America recognition.
Hammond placed 10th in the second heat with a personal best 3:41.36, edging out the previous school mark of 3:41.48 run by Rob Cunningham in 1993. His kick helped him surpass two runners to grab his final spot in the semis over the final 400 meters, He finished just two seconds out of first. Hammond entered the meet ranked 18th in the event with a best time of 3:41.69, which was second all-time for the Big Red. Hammond took 13th overall at the NCAA Preliminary East Round after being seeded 33rd entering the meet.
