ITHACA, N.Y. -- Former Big Red wrestling standout Kyle Dake claimed his fourth world title and current Cornell grappler
Yianni Diakomihalis earned a silver as the 2022 Senior World Championships concluded on Sunday afternoon in Belgrade, Serbia. Dake claimed the title at 74kg, while Diakomihalis was runner-up at 65kg.
Dake was 5-0 in his run to the world title, topping Tajmuraz Salkazanov of Slovakia 3-2 in the finals. He squeezed by Iranian Yones Emamichoghaei by a 2-2, criteria decision in the semis. He rolled into the semis with tech falls of Islambek Orozbekov of Kyrgyzstan and Suldkhuu Olonbayer of Mongolia, then used a big throw to result in a fall over India's Sagar Jaglan in 42 seconds in the quarterfinal. He adds to world titles won in 2018 (Budapest), 2019 (Nur-Sultan) and 2021 (Oslo) and well as a 2020 Olympic bronze in Tokyo and four NCAA crowns.
Diakomihalis fell in the final to Iran's Rahman Amouzadkhalili, 13-8, after blasting through the field to reach his first gold medal match at the Senior World Championships. He opened the tournament with a hard-fought 4-0 decision over Armenian Vazgen Tevanyan, avenging his loss at the 2021 world championship. The Big Red senior then earned three straight 10-0 tech falls to reach the final, including first period victories over Vladimir Dubov of Bulgaria and former NCAA champion Sebastian Rivera of Puerto Rico in the semifinals. He defeated eventual bronze medal winner Bajrang Bajrang 10-0 in the quarterfinal, his second winner over the multiple-time podium finisher from India. The three-time NCAA champion will aim for his fourth championship this spring.
Former Big Red All-American Ben Honis wrestled in freestyle for Italy at 97kg, losing in his qualifying match to China's Tuerxunbieke Muheite, 6-4.
