ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Cornell men's and women's polo teams will be unveiled for the first time under first-year head coach Tony Condo this coming weekend when the Big Red competes in the annual Red-White Scrimmage on Saturday, Oct. 1 at 12 p.m. at Oxley Equestrian Center. The women will kick off its regular season when it hits the road to face regional foe Skidmore on Sunday, Oct. 2 at 1 p.m. in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.
The women are coming off a 10-10 campaign in 2021-22 that included a second-place finish at the USPA Northeast Intercollegiate Regionals. Experienced returners include seniors
Lea Jih-Vieira, Sofia Kofsky and
Jasmine Umrigar. The trio will help bolster Condo's transition to leading the program.
Condo is no stranger to the Cornell polo programs, serving as a volunteer assistant coach for the Big Red from 2005-18 and helping them to four USPA national titles (men in 2005; women in 2011, 2015 and 2016). During that period, Cornell posted a 382-125-1 combined record (.753) with 24 Northeast regional titles. He served as interim head coach during the first semester of the 2018-19 season, taking responsibility for all aspects of the program. He was also on the staff of the 2010 interscholastic team out of Cornell that won a national title.
Condo is a USPA certified instructor, clinician and certified umpire, having officiated Intercollegiate and Interscholastic polo tournaments, including the USPA National Championships on several occasions. He has extensive playing experience in both outdoor and arena polo, and has most recently served as a tournament manager for the NYTS (National Youth Tournament Series) program since 2020.
The men's team will play its first regular season contest on Oct. 15 when it welcomes Cal Poly to Oxley for a 6 p.m. matchup.
