ITHACA, N.Y. -- Mansfield piled up 435 yards on offense and ran out to a 35-0 lead on its way to a 42-14 victory over Cornell sprint football on Friday evening at Schoellkopf Field. The Mounties improved to 2-1, while the Big Red fell to 0-2 on the young season.
Xavier Martinez threw touchdowns to
Evan Nicholas and
Luke Verzella,
Colton Kotecki amassed 254 all-purpose yards and
Will Anderson (13 tackles) and
Billy Turner (11 tackles) combined for 24 tackles to highlight a Big Red squad that rebounded nicely from a season-opening defeat at Army West Point. The home opener allowed Cornell to put some good things on tape - allowing just one sack in 32 dropbacks, committing just four penalties and compiling 249 yards of offense.
Mansfield's Cahsid Raymond completed 12-of-23 passes for 244 yards and three touchdowns, while the rushing attack saw the visitors add 182 yards and three more scores on the ground. Audie McAree ran for 47 yards and two touchdowns on just seven carries. Eugene Hayes caught two passes for 91 yards - receptions of 47 and 44 yards - with one touchdown. Defensively, Bobby Dell notched eight tackles with two coming for a loss, and Eric Jones III had four tackles with a sack, a forced fumble and a pass breakup.
Raymond had 244 passing yards and three touchdowns in the first three quarters as Mansfield built a 42-7 lead. Cornell got on the board for the first time in 2022 midway through the third when Martinez hit
Evan Nicholas from 6 yards out to make it 35-7.
Cornell added a fourth quarter score when
Luke Verzella snatched a 4-yard pass from Martinez out of the air to close out the scoring, capping a 12-play, 62-yard drive. That possession began after
Yamato Hill separated Mansfield's Jed Reese from the football and Maximilian Delahunta pounced on it for Cornell's only takeaway of the day.
The Big Red returns to the road to face Navy on Friday, Oct. 7 at 7 p.m. in Annapolis, Md.
